Any association of persons, producers, organization, or authority established under law representing the interest of the producers of the goods can apply for GI registration. Individuals cannot apply.
A GI registration is valid for 10 years from the date of registration and can be renewed indefinitely for further periods of 10 years each.
India is a member of the TRIPS Agreement which provides for GI protection. Additionally, bilateral and multilateral agreements can provide protection for Indian GIs in other countries. The Lisbon Agreement and Geneva Act also offer international registration routes.
