GI Renewal support from our Geographical Indication team, handled end-to-end as part of our Intellectual Property practice.
GI renewal can be filed up to 6 months before the expiry date and within 6 months after expiry (with a surcharge). The renewed certificate is typically issued within 2 to 4 months of filing.
We make legal and intellectual property filings seamless, secure, and fully transparent. Here is how we handle your assignment from start to finish:
Understand your goals, check eligibility, and draft the filing roadmap.
Collect required records and conduct compliance checks for errors.
Draft and submit applications to the registry within 48 business hours.
Monitor application progress and respond to office actions/objections.
Handover certified registrations and provide post-filing support.
A GI registration is valid for 10 years from the date of registration and can be renewed indefinitely for further periods of 10 years by filing the renewal application with the prescribed fee.
A GI that has lapsed due to non-renewal can be restored by filing an application within the prescribed window after expiry, subject to the Registrar's discretion and payment of the restoration fee and surcharge.
No, renewal is primarily an administrative process — payment of the fee and filing of the renewal form. However, if there have been significant changes to the product specification or geographic area, these should be updated separately.
